Yes indeed, it has been busy around here. Above is an illustration I did for TreeBaltimore. I am pleased to say that it has been accepted into the Illustrators Club of DC, MD and VA members show. The show will be at the Art Institute of Washington- Arlington and runs from January 9, 2010 – February 7, 2010.

Urban Forest Project adds D.C. to list of cities in awareness campaign; Washington, D,C
Urban Forest Project makes D.C. greener American Observer:
In a city overrun by standstill traffic and scarce parking spaces, the district is going back to its roots—bringing 'green' back by turning its streets into an urban forest.
Banners designed by local designers and artists will be hung on light posts at high-traffic locations throughout the city as part of the Urban Forest Project. Each banner’s design will be a metaphor for the tree, a symbol of sustainability, aimed at making a visual statement on the environment.
The Urban Forest Project, conceived by Worldstudio, a marketing and design firm, was orginally executed in New York City in the Fall of 2006. The project promotes going green and has taken root in Albuquerque, Baltimore, Denver and Portland. The D.C. project will be the first to welcome design submissions in an open call. In other cities, the project designs have been invite-only.

Maryland's natural resources secretary plans to hit the streets of Cumberland to discuss the western Maryland city's urban tree canopy program.
DNR Secretary John Griffin will take a walking tour of the city on Friday. Program officials say trees provide shade that lowers temperatures and saves energy as well as reducing storm runoff and improving water quality. Other benefits include enhanced property values and increased wildlife habitat.
Cumberland is one of a number of cities statewide with urban tree canopy programs. DNR officials will discuss how federal, state and local officials are working to create a plan that can serve as a model for other cities.

Mayor John Hieftje says he doesn't have a fancy bicycle, but it gets the job done.
'I have a pretty boring bike actually,' he said. 'It's got fenders - it's a commuter bike - but it gets me around town very well and comfortably.'
On Saturday, Hieftje will hop on his wheels to join the Ann Arbor Tree Conservancy for the first-ever Tree Tour Bike Ride, a two-hour riding tour of some of the greenest parts of Tree Town.
Michael Conlin of the Tree Conservancy said his group hopes to show the mayor people care about Ann Arbor's tree canopy as much as they do biking. The route for Saturday's ride is posted at http://www.annarbortreeconservancy.org/.

50 trees to be given to 50 top entries in UTC essay contest; Cumberland, MD; 3/16/09

The contest is open to residents of all ages. Fifty trees will be given away to the top 50 essays. Essays will be evaluated by city staff. The winning essayist will be recognized at the Arbor Day Festival on April 23.In 500 words or less describe the importance of trees in an urban setting like Cumberland or how you can contribute to the enhancement of the urban tree canopy in the city or the writer’s community.
