£3m Australian gum tree memorial completed - Building Design:
Queensland practices m3architecture and Brian Hooper Architect have completed a £3 million memorial for a gum tree that played an important part in Australia’s history.
The Tree of Knowledge in Barcaldine is regarded as the birthplace of the Australian Labor Party following a famous strike in 1891. The 150-year-old ghost gum was poisoned in 2006 and the memorial was commissioned to commemorate it.
The practices designed an 18m-high steel and wood shelter for the remaining branches with a glass floor so visitors can see its root ball.

The weather cooperated at the dedication of a memorial tree, Tuesday evening, with a brief downpour. As someone in the crowd said who gathered to remember Lisa A. Cronin, the rain drops were “tears.”
Lisa worked as a waitress at Trackside Grill in downtown Honesdale, when she was murdered at her home, July 7, 2007- by her husband. On the second anniversary of her death, her boss and owner of the Trackside, Jeffrey Hiller, arranged the planting of a tree in her honor.
Lisa, who was 42, worked at the same location when it was Maple City Restaurant and started with Hiller when Trackside Grill opened in April 2007. Hiller recalled that she had a “kind and giving heart though she suffered more than most of us.” She left behind five children. She was also a social worker at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

“There was the practical component to protect the tree, as one of Australia’s 74 national heritage-listed sites, from sun and rain,” he said. “But there was also an architectural approach as to how to provide cover over the top of the dead tree. The whole process was about creating the original canopy from the time of the shearers’ strike in 1890s through photographic evidence.
“It’s quite an impressive cathedral space, with dappled light reflecting off the metal and you get this lovely movement with the wind through the building as well. The timber members actually sway so you get an effect symbolic of a tree.”
The poisoning of the tree remains a mystery. Suspects include disgruntled political opponents of the Labor Party, drunken pranksters or incompetent gardeners.
