When we think about what trees do for people most of us think about the shade they provide on a hot sunny day or a place to hang a swing for playtime.
As fifth-graders at Greenwood schools learned this Arbor Day, trees do more for us and our environment than we can merely see, such as absorbing carbon dioxide, making oxygen and cooling the air.
The Greenwood Tree Board recognized the environmentally conscious occasion by visiting those students to remind them of the importance of urban forestry and promote the annual fifth-grade poster contest.

Amid plans for a parade, 5K, crafts, music and exhibits at the Green Day! Environmental Expo, perhaps the most exciting event for the day is the presentation of Plantation's 30th year being certified as Tree City USA.
'It's a very distinct honor to be certified as a Tree City USA, especially for 30 consecutive years,' said Sue Reed, Plantation's executive secretary. 'This is a very special milestone for the city of Plantation, so there will be a big celebration.'
The certification is given by the Arbor Day Foundation and standards for qualifying are based on the city having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per person, and observing Arbor Day.

Several hundred Romans, many of them garden club members, gathered along the trail behind State Mutual Stadium on Friday to celebrate Arbor Day and dedicate the new Riverside Memorial Arboretum.
Carolyn Walker, president of the Rome Federated Garden Clubs, spoke during the dedication of the arboretum. “Today we celebrate the future of these blessings (from the earth) as the strong scarlet oaks grow and provide beauty, shade, home for God’s creatures and clean air here on the banks of the Oostanaula River,” said Walker.
Twelve scarlet oaks were planted, one for each of the 12 garden clubs in Rome.

OXFORD — The city of Oxford’s Arbor Day celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at George Street Park. Everyone is invited to attend.
The celebration, sponsored by the Oxford Trees, Parks and Recreation Board, will include the reading of an Arbor Day proclamation by Mayor Jerry Roseberry, a demonstration of tree care by Bartlett Tree Service, a children’s activity table sponsored by Oxford College, coffee and donuts, and free seedlings provided by the Covington Service Guild.
At noon, everyone is invited to head over to the pocket park on Bonnell Street for the planting of dogwood seedlings.
Oxford residents and officials have long been concerned with maintaining the historic city’s tree canopy.
“This is Oxford’s 11th year as a Tree City USA,” said City Councilman Hoyt Oliver. “We’ve been (removing) old oaks from Oak Street, but the tree board has been planting more than we’re losing.”

By the time he was done for the day, the mayor's peach-hued tie and powder blue shirt were a little sweat-tinged after he and Councilman Monty Walford, along with key city parks personnel, put their shoulders to shovels and hands to earth to replace, in part, 60 trees lost last year in a tornado.Glover and company planted 27 trees on the parkway's popular lighted disc golf course in recognition of Louisiana Arbor Day and as a prelude to the Martin Luther King. Gainesville earns Tree City USA status from National Arbor Day Foundation for 26th consecutive year; Gainesville, FL

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Social Affairs will plant the 52nd and final tree for its 2010 Arbor Day observance outside the Kirby Smith Center on Thursday.
The tradition in Gainesville since 2002 has been to plant two trees for every year the city has been an official Tree City. According to a second tradition, everyone present at the planting must throw dirt on the tree – this year a 13-foot live oak -- with a golden shovel.
According to Meg Niedherhofer, this year's celebration will focus on the financial benefits of trees.
Gainesville's tree canopy, which the University of Florida's School of Forest Resources and Conservation estimates at 3 million trees, provides $75 million per year in financial benefits such as flood prevention and pollution mitigation, she said. The U.S. Forest Service estimates that each tree provides $25 in real estate and aesthetic value, which provides an additional $78 million to Gainesville.

The city was presented with two awards, the PLANT Community Award and the Tree City USA Award.“PLANT comes from Planting, Loving and Nurturing Trees,” said Don Malaney, chairman of the Allegany County Forestry Board. “And it is my honor to present the green award, the highest award, to Cumberland.”Malaney said the city has taken many actions to once again receive this award.“In 2008, Cumberland planted 224 new trees in the city and recycled 200 Christmas trees,” he said. “They collected 90 tons of leaves to be composted and contracted for removal of 25 hazardous trees and 113 tree stumps.”Wilson presented the Tree City USA Award and said it is not an easy award to come by.

The City of Rancho Cordova will commemorate Arbor Day a couple days early by planting two Chinese Pistache trees in a ceremony in front of City Hall (2729 Prospect Park Dr.) on Thursday, March 5th at 10 a.m. Participating in the planting will be Council Members Linda Budge and Bob McGarvey with other City officials and staff. Also attending will be Cindy Blain, Greenprint Relations Director of the Sacramento Tree Foundation.
The City is an active partner in the Greenprint initiative which includes 22 cities, Sacramento County, and three surrounding counties. Greenprint’s focal point is to double the region’s urban tree canopy by planting 5 million new trees by 2025. The four-year-old initiative was the vision of the Sacramento Tree Foundation.
