A green recovery more than a decade after the siege
Desperate times called for desperate measures as the months wore on during the siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1996. The city’s residents treasured their trees, but cut off from energy and water supplies, they were reduced to chopping down nearly three quarters of them, mostly for firewood. A study in the journal Urban Forestry & Urban Greening documents both the remaining damage and the hopeful recovery of the urban forest.
